Food for Thought
(Continued from Stories of Changed Lives)

When Henley started a new relationship, he chose someone also battling addiction.  Though his significant other tried to stay clean, eventually she returned to drugs.  “I have three children.  I had a house, car and a good job,” Henley says.  “When my partner went back to addiction, I tried to fix it and stay strong.  But when she fell, I fell behind her.  I went down with her because I didn’t want be alone.”

Henley came to Raleigh Rescue Mission and joined our Life Plan Program.  There he found hope with the help of skilled and loving counselors who gave him plenty of food for thought.  “I was afraid to look at my fear of being alone,” Henley admits.  “And because I refused to look at my fears, I reacted in self-destructive ways.”

Raleigh Rescue Mission provided a place for Henley to grow in his faith.  “The support rivals anything I’ve ever seen.  Their counselors make tough decisions and make us listen to things we don’t want to hear.”

While Henley hopes to reunite with his family someday, he leaves the future in God’s hands.  “That’s up to God and I’m not putting a timetable on it.  I’m holding on to Galatians 6:9, ‘Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.’”

“Raleigh Rescue Mission’s staff and volunteers pay particular attention to the individual needs of people,” he says, then refers to the bold white letters on the Mission’s façade:  “They solve the problems of hunger and homelessness one person at a time.”

Currently, Henley works in the Mission’s kitchen preparing meals for our residents each day.  Please pray for him as he continues to grow in Christ and leave addiction behind!
